Why You Might Have Come Here

You might have come to this Wiki, or been asked to check this Wiki, because you saw "Touhou" contents that:

What is Cookie☆

Cookie☆ is a series of memes and internet subculture that was born out of a failed Touhou voice drama. The name is the shorthand for Marisa and Alice’s Cookie Kiss, the original voice drama (referred as Cookie☆OG in the wiki, as Cookie☆ is used as the name for the entire subculture). It is a collaborated fan work of the Touhou Project game franchise, organised and uploaded by Niconico user Hazuna Rio. Due to its terrible quality, frequently switching art styles, and the poor skills of the voice actressses, the drama became a meme on the Japanese internet, and thereby developed into a web subculture. Numerous other voice dramas of Touhou, some made to deliberately imitate the original Cookie☆, were included into the canon as well. It was also linked to the notorious Manatsu no Yo no Inmu subculture, born from the poorly-made gay porns. In the Japanese community today, Cookie☆ is often associated with Inmu but seen as independent from the Touhou community from which it originated. Most Cookie☆ characters seen in the fanworks are fundamentally the fictionalised versions of the voice actresses of these Touhou voice dramas, who borrow their appearances from the Touhou characters that they played and little more.

The Cookie☆ subculture involves mainly the reference to the voice dramas and their characters. Cookie☆ characters are developed based on solely their voice actors. They only retain the appearance of the original Touhou characters and little more. Their development is based on the characters of the voice actors, their performance in the voice drama, and contents added by later creations. The works are mainly in the forms of illustrations, otoMAD/YTPMVs, and what is known as BB theatres—scenes constructed using animated blue-background materials. While there is not a centralised authority for the community, its members agrees on certain basic facts about these characters.

Cookie☆’s notoriety also came from its complex association with cyber violence. A certain group of Cookie☆ community members are known to be extremely active in doxxing and other forms of online harassment. Due to this and the fact that Cookie☆ voice dramas are associated with poor quality, many voice actors who participated in the dramas had chosen to either distance themselves from the community or quit their online activity for good. Even some content creators of Cookie☆ have been affected by doxxing as well.

The essence and morality of Cookie☆ is an extremely complicated subject due to its decentralised nature. Members of the community create high-quality contents, participate in cyberviolence activities, or do both or neither. The name of Cookie☆ provides little more than a common environment and language, by which various different individuals conduct their works free of regulation.
